Fire
16 Oct 2019
My daughter Hanna was visiting me on my finca and shouted: "Dad, come on over here, smoke is coming up!" Yes, it looked worrying. And then bushes were already on fire. We brought water but couldn't stop the fire...I had just covered the future kitchen roof with dead banana leaves the day before so it wouldn't be that noticeable from the air and from the small asphalt road. The banana leaves burned very well...
The shelf, the hut and the cave below burned down. The most expensive thing was Hanna's camera, which she bought for €1000. Several neighbors came to help extinguish the fire. The fire brigade needed time because of no vehicle access. By the time she put the hose down, the fire was under control. She still put out the embers.
A few hours later another alarm sounded: there was a fire down there again! Apparently some embers remained on the slope and fell into the blackberries, which had many dead vines. The fire brigade came again and was only ready for action again when we had almost completely extinguished the fire.
In the night I got up to check, it smoked a bit again! But now 2 buckets of water were enough, and now everything was really extinguished. We hardly had any clothes, blankets or tools, but the neighbors gave us everything we needed. Hanna slept in the tipi hut, I in the open air. We also got a tent, but I didn't want to set it up anymore.
The cause of the fire was a child playing with fire in the finca below us. Luckily we are all safe and the fire didn't spread further. We order a container, and with the great help of neighbors weput there all the rubbish and the contaminated earth.
And then my daughter Hanna had a new project. Because she is an architect...
