A huge cave gave us
warm nights in the winter time!

In the "Next events" I announced this walkabout as follows: "Jean Claude, Aim'jie and I are thinking to walk around Motril, as there are beautiful rock formations, a big warm cave (Cueva del Capitán), fruits like chirimoyas on the road, and we never walked there along the coast, form beach to beach. We're not sure if we really will do it and want to decide spontaneously, so we don't announce it via newsletter. But if you want to join, we're open for it."

Andreas then visited us, he came from Germany to southern Spain with his van, and then Thomas from Belgium.  Both took part in the walkabout, so there were 5 people in total ... The winter in south Spain is like the spring in middle Europe: no frost, but the nights can be cold for sleeping outdoor, warm sleeping bags are required. But we slept two nights in a huge warm cave and two nights in houses of our friends.

Sunday, 2 Jan 2022:

four hikers sitting on the ground taking a break

We started in Salobreña at the Mediterranean coast. At the Río Guadalfeo we find tasty chirimoyas and make a break.

Big cave inside

We sleep in the Cueva del Capitán ("cave of the captain"). It's a large room. But there's even a second room. I sleep in the tunnel in between.

Monday:

Muriel and I crack almonds using stones

We left the sleeping stuff in the cave and go on a day hike. We find much food on the way, like almonds.

Small house in a tree

A beautiful hut in a fig tree

Murielle walking downhill

We split up: Jean Claude, Thomas and Andreas go back the same way, Aim'jie and I choose a path through the wilderness.

Small mountain

We went down that hill, near the power poles.

Small mountains

The entrance of the cave cannot be seen from the hiking trail and is not easy to find, it's about 100 m away. But from the east side, we discover it.

Sleeping stuff in a cave

We sleep again in the cave. Here you can see my sleeping place in the tunnel. It's more than 10 degree warmer than outside!

Tuesday:

Exit of the cave from inside

Andreas and the morning sun

Fog in a valley

Because of the inversion weather, there is more fog on the coast than in the mountains. That's why we decide to continue hiking in the mountains...

4 hikers

We call Pascale. She comes and we walk together to her finca.

Peeling an avocado, many more avocados on the path

We collect more than 10 kg of this small but very tasty avacados. According to Plácido, it's the variety "Topa Topa".

Road with car, on the foot of a mountain, wild area

We arrive at Pascale's finca and sleep in her hut and house.

Wednesday:

Cloud that looks like coming from a vulcan

It's not on La Palma... a special photo from Andreas in the morning.

Meal in a house with abundance of avocados

We enjoy the abundance of avocados in Pascale's house.

6 hikers at Pascale's cottage

We leave together with Pascale, to visit another friend...

Hikers on a path in the mountains

I love such trails!

5 hikers eating prickly pears on a small road

We find many various fruits, here the cactus figs.

Hikers walking a path downwards, in the background a village, hills and the sea

Molvizar, in the background the Mediterranean sea

Road and house in an area with moutains

We arrive at Plácido's finca, sing and sleep in his house.

Thursday:

Hikers on a path in the mountains

On the way down to Jete and Río Verde

Information board with trails around the willage Jete

Trails around Jete

Hikers on a dirt road

In the dry river bed of the Río Verde, we find many chirimoyas and walk to Almuñécar, there we finish our Walkabout.
