Small Winter Walkabout, mountains of Nerja

5 - 6 Feb 2025

Sleeping outside in the middle of winter is hard to imagine for some people, even here in southern Spain. I invited some friends who felt the same way to sleep just one night in a cave in the mountains...

Mountains of Nerja, South Spain  ★  Susanne enjoys hiking with her partner Uwe. But sleeping outside is not her thing, especially not in winter. She is sensitive to the cold and often has to go out at night to pee. Simone was also sceptical...

Processionary moth nests - the caterpillars kill many spruce trees by eating the needles.

A stone ghost with green tears

The dry river bed of the Barranco de Maro is beatiful for walking.

Mira does a handstand.

The sight of this cave makes us curious.

It is quite large.

We have to climb to get up this dam wall.

The area on the other side is not yet completely filled with alluvial soil. The dam wall helps to slow down the flow of water during heavy rainfall and limit potential damage caused by erosion.

We still follow the riverbed of the Barranco de Maro and end up in a kind of cave.

It is beautiful inside.

It is open at the top, a dry waterfall.

Break at the spring "Fuente del Esparto"

The cave we wanted to hike to is still too far away. We go to sleep here.

But first we eat something together.

Thursday

We are on the way back. Susanne and Simone didn't sleep much, so they're tired. The path here is littered with clippings from gorse. As a barefoot runner, I prefer to take the diversions over the ridge.

Now we are all on the ridge...

...with great views and pleasant weather at lofty heights in the middle of winter.

There on the coast is my finca, the starting point and destination of this hike.
