Manhood Walkabout

13 - 15 Apr 2025

There are some young people in my neighbourhood with the usual problems: hating the school, smartphone addiction, lack of physical activity etc. So we invited them to take part in a joint challenge. But only the boys and two men...

It may seem out of date in the face of equality and feminism to invite only boys and no girls. It's an idea from my friend Jean Claude: we want to help the boys to identify with their masculinity in a healthy way, by spending a few days with other boys and men in nature, enjoying together the physical life in beautiful nature, far from screens and videogames. This is also because they often have a closer relationship with their mother than with their father during their childhood. In August, I invite them to another hike, then with their parents and anyone else who wants to come along. On this hike I was unable to enforce any dietary restrictions.

Almost all participants are doing such a hike for the first time - so, of course, the luggage often needs to be improved.

We walk for a while along the Río Guadalfeo. A dam there makes a great water slide.

Monday

We slept in the large cave, which I previously called Cueva del Capitán. On the mapy.cz map, it is now called Cueva de los Caballos.

We had to tackle some moderate ascents and descents.

I was in charge of leading the hike. Despite the practical smartphone features, I got lost twice.

It rained on the second night. I had set up tarps for the boys to shelter from the rain. But there was little space underneath, and the water ran from the tarps onto the sleeping pads, soaking almost everything. That was the end of the hike.
