Map of our route

We started the year 2023 with an easy walkabout and invited also families with children. The families canceled their participation, but a couple from Galilee came and hiked with Murielle and me. The couple is used to a different style of walkabout. For them, connecting with hikers and with the people we meet on the way is a higher priority, as is avoiding grocery shopping.

During their walkabouts in Galilee, the participants connect with each other more intensely and sleep close to each other at night. The hiking route is often based on where you can find something to eat. Like us, they eat everything raw and are very familiar with edible wild plants. But they also go into plantations and collect fruit from the ground and ask farmers about leftovers from their production. Murielle and I pretty much conformed to that, and we found it interesting. It was fitting that this hike took place in an area with a lot of fruit and vegetable cultivation...

4 hitchhikers together with thumb up

We planned to go by bus from our home in Maro to Salobreña. But our friends suggested to hitchhike. And it worked well!

Walking of a line of concrete slabs

The car dropped us in the village Lobres (north of Salobreña). Then we walked on top of a closed water channel ...

Me at the entrance of the cave with pullpver on the head

... to the cave "Cueva del Barranco Iznate". I protect my head with my pullover...

Danielle in a cave tunnel

... because the cave has long tunnels ...

Me in a narrow cave tunnel

... and often it's narrow.

Danielle in a cave tunnel with rock formations

Our friends like caves as much as I do. There are beautiful rock formations.

3 of us from far on a slope of a mountain

Murielle stayed outside and made a photo when we came out. You don't find us? Click on the photo and zoom!

Hiker in the wilderness of high grass

After 1 km, we get to another impressing cave. The entrance is difficult to find. But we have the position of the cave on our phone, that's helping.

Entrance of the cave from inside

It's the "Cueva del Capitán". Murielle and I visited it already several times:
Cave Walk (Oct 2020)
Captian Walk (Mar 2021)
Winter Walk (Jan 2022)

3 people squatting cracking nuts

We decide to sleep in the cave. But as we have still some hours of daylight, we walk in an area of many avocados, almonds and other fruits.

Monday
2 people lie in the cave

Ishmaelle and Danielle sleep in the cave.

Murielle's and my sleeping place in front of the entrance of the cave

Murielle and I sleep outside, as Murielle doesn't like the dust in the cave.

Murielle and I eating in the high grass in warm clothes

Yesterday evening we brought many oranges and avocados. We have a rich breakfast.

3 hikers walk down a slope

We walk down from the cave to the road on the direct way.

Danielle in a concrete shaft

Danielle takes a shower with the agriculture water. We put the branch for getting in and out.

Danielle walks on a road with cherimoyas in the hand, cherimoya trees on the left side

We find ripe cherimoyas under the trees - delicious sweet fruits.

3 hikers walking through a river with a bit water

Crossing the Rio Guadalfeo. We prefer the way through the water instead of the bridge with car traffic.

2 feet in the mud

Danielle enjoys the mud.

2 hikers walk on a road on the side of the river

We walk along the river Río Guadalfeo to the beach.

Murielle and I sit on a road, Murielle eats the Cattails

Ishmaelle showed us what to eat from the Cattails - the lower part of the stem.

About 10 people sitting and standing in the sand on a beach and talking

We get in touch with a group of alternative people.

We and our sleeping place at palm trees

We sleep under some palm trees. Irrigation starts at night.  Luckily we don't get wet from it.

Tuesday
Murielle collects malva leaves

We collect big mallow leaves...

Murielle and I sit on a beach and eat

... and Ishmaelle makes "sandwiches" of them with avocados and vegetables.

We talk with people from a flashy yellow painted van

Travellers give us filtered drinking water. We connect with them.

Info board of the hiking trail PR-A-420

In Torrenueva we follow this hiking trail along the coast.

Info board about several bushes

Now I finally know the name of the bush from which I have been eating the juicy leaves for years: Lycium Intricatum - Southern Boxthorn!

We hike on a path on a little mountain along the sea

The hiking trail is beautiful ...

Rock in the shape of the face of an old man

... and has impressing rocks. Here it looks like, an old man wants to eat the big stone.

Murielle and Danielle on a road with open arms and red hibiscus flowers in the mouths

We reach the beach of Carchuna and find there Hibiscus flowers. They're good to eat.

Big meadow, 1 person is picking something

Here we find much chard.

Big container full of fresh cucumbers, 3 of us on the side of the container

And here many cucumbers from a green house. One container fresh cucumbers for the rubbish!

Wednesday
Sleeping stuff under an avocado tree

Overnight under an avocado tree.

View to an area of greenhouses

At first glance it looks like a lake, but it's plastic - lots of greenhouses.  Not a pretty sight for nature lovers, but we liked their cucumbers, peppers and, above all, one type of tomato.

2 hikers on a path along the slope of a mountain, left in the background greenhouses

Also in this area there are lonely paths that are good for hiking. We enjoy the hike, although we will probably avoid this area in the future.

Danielle bathing in a small water channel

Danielle bathes in an acequia (a small water channel).

Camion on a slope touching a greenhouse

This truck took a wrong turn... Maybe the driver was hungry?

Big full water tank, Danielle jumps in the water

Danielle is bathing again - pretty brave, isn't it?

Danielle and I on the wall of the water tank

I need a lot more time until I'm in the cold water.

Murielle eats cherimoyas

We enjoy again the delicious cherimoyas.

Thursday
Big pebble beach, in the background at the water Murielle stands on one leg

We slept in the same place as on Tuesday night. Murielle has bathed and is doing her morning exercises.

We eat tomatoes and avocado pieces in malva leaves

Ishmaelle's sandwiches are back for breakfast.

Avocados, tomatoes, grapefruit, mandarine and more on the ground

These greenhouse tomatoes are particularly tasty.  The legumes are ice cream beans (Inga edulis).

I'm laying on a mat, Murielle gives me a massage

We stay a little longer for a massage.

2 of us on a road in a park, tree with red fruits

We do not know these fruits yet.

Danielle walks through the reed

According to osmand's map, there should be a path here.  Instead, there is only wilderness.  But we find it quite exciting to fight our way through.

We walk in the evening with street lights on a small street in the city

In the evening we take a walk through Salobreña to the castle.

Friday
Fruits and vegetables on the ground and in 2 buckets

To keep the fruit from being crushed, Ishmaelle and Danielle took a bucket with them.  We found another bucket on the way.

The driver and Ishmaelle in the car

Ishmaelle and Danielle go back by hitchhiking. Murielle and I go by bus, to be sure to be back home in time, because in the evening I lead a choir.
